Secondary Difficulty
Several people who have contacted us have no idea what the temperature of their pond water is. This is absolutely important if we are to advise a way forward.
As an example, a lady phoned us with a Koi on its side, very shallow respiration, and very little reaction to stimuli. . The water temperature was 7 deg.C. (slightly heated). At this temperature, the problem is unlikely to be a due to extreme water cooling and the measures described above would be unlikely to help. From the clinical symptoms which she described, there is obviously a respiratory problem but without a site examination, a further diagnosis cannot be made. In this case, we would suggest a mild saline bath (1.5oz/ gal) to see if the gills can be cleared of debris to help the intake of oxygen. Should the Koi be infested with costia (a secondary parasite which will often invade sick fish and cause damage to the respiratory system), the salt will deal with the costia difficulty.
Returning now to the point being made, it is absolutely essential that every Koi Keeper HAS A RELIABLE THERMOMETER. If you havn’t got one, we have some very economical good quality digital thermometers in stock. If you need one, give us a ring on 01243 572762, 07726840627 or send us an email at rod@healthykoi.co.uk
Good luck with the winter
